Cozumel Motels

Should I stay in Cozumel motels? I will share my experiences staying in 2 different motels that I have stayed in several times. I love them both for different reasons.

What can you expect in Cozumel motels

I will share information about 2 motels. The first is called the Hotel Casona Real, the second is Hotel Mary Carmen. Both of these motels are perfect for someone on a tight budget, someone who will not be in their motel room most of the time, or for divers focused on diving on not their motel.

Hotel Casona Real( http://www.hotel-la-casona-real-cozumel.com/ )

I have stayed at this hotel twice. It is relatively clean. It is similar to a typical motel in the U.S. The cost varies between $35-$45 a night. Like many Cozumel motels it is a few blocks from the central plaza. This one is about 4 blocks from the central plaza area. I like this motel because it is right near a large grocery store where you can buy tons of water bottles and relatively easily walk them to your motel.

Hotel Mary Carmen

I stayed in this motel about a month ago. It is less expensive then the other motels at about $25 a night. It’s location is excellent as it is in the central plaza area. It is very close to all of the main restaurants unlike other motels. There is a small convenience store within half a block. The rooms are clean as well. It isn’t a Marriot, it is a motel similar to motels in the U.S. I think I prefer this motel over Hotel Casona Real because of its location.

Both of these motels in this post are good choices. If you are looking for inexpensive motels these are 2 really good options. They have really good ratings on Trip Advisor as well. You won’t find a lot of extras in these motels but you will be able to use your money on other activities besides your lodging.

Cozumel Excursions

Many people coming into Cozumel on a cruise want to know what are some good Cozumel excursions that don’t cost a lot of money? Here are a few ideas.

Cozumel excursions

This is not a comprehensive list but it will let you know what some options to consider. I will list a few of the most popular ones first and then list the less expensive Cozumel excursions in my second list.

There is a lot of shopping opportunities in Cozumel. You can find some smaller shops right near where the cruise ships come in, and for a $5-$8 taxi ride you can go into the central downtown shopping areas. There are a much larger concentration of shops there versus the area near where the cruise ships are. No need for an expensive tour guide to go shopping. This is great Cozumel excursion if you want to take your time taking in the ambience of Cozumel.

Dining Options

The majority of the dining options are in the downtown area near the central plaza. I would recommend sticking to the bigger restaurants. There is a nice restaurant right near the ferry that goes to Playa Del Carmen. It has pretty good food and the ice they use their is made from purified water. They have water bottles and soda bottles if you don’t want to try out the local drinks. If you are looking for good American pizza there is even a Pizza Hut not too far away from the central plaza. This is one of many less expensive Cozumel shore excursions.

Public Beaches

Another less expensive option for Cozumel excursions is a public beach versus the very high priced beach club options. The best public beaches are on the east side of the island. You can pull over at any of the beaches along the rode because the public beaches are right alongside the road. Your best bet is to rent a car or scooters and make a half day trip. Although, I would take a taxi but it will cost you approximately $l5 for them to take you each way. Make sure you get the phone number of the taxi driver so you can call him to pick you up when you are done at the beach because their aren’t taxi’s just sitting there. This is my favorite of all of the less expensive Cozumel excursions because other then the transportation to get there, you will not have any other costs.

Massages

The most relaxing Cozumel excursions are the massages. There are several good massage places in the central plaza area. All you have to do is ask one of the workers at a store where the massages are because they all know where they are. Massages are about $60 per hour in the central plaza area but they are worth it. They all have air conditioning in the central plaza area versus some of the massages at beach clubs where are outdoors.

Cozumel Dive Packages Recommendation

There are lots of Cozumel scuba diving companies and Cozumel dive packages. I will be talking very specifically about the most common Cozumel Dive Packages and will provide a personal recommendation for a specific Cozumel scuba diving company.

Cozumel Dive Packages

The most common Cozumel dive package is what is called a 2-tank dive. The 2-tank dives usually leave around 7:30am and return about 1:00pm. For most of the Cozumel scuba diving companies it takes about 30 minutes to get to the dive sites. The Cozumel dive packages include the tanks, weights, and a guide to go down with you. Many of the companies include in their fees the taxes and a marine park fee that everyone has to pay in order to dive in Cozumel. The average cost for a 2-tank dive ranges between $80-$100. The Cozumel dive packages can often include rental gear. If you need everything in your Cozumel dive package including a wetsuit, dive computer, BCD, regulator, a mask, and fins it will cost you between $30-$40.

Dive Equipment

Their are a lot of different views about whether to rent equipment as part of your Cozumel dive package or to bring your own. It is a lot easier to rent because you don’t have to haul your equipment to the airport, from the airport to your hotel and then from your hotel to the dive shop each day. On the other hand, bringing your own equipment ensures that your equipment is excellent condition and saves you money. If you are going to rent equipment make sure you are carefully checking each piece of equipment for obvious damage, cracks, etc. I prefer the hybrid approach. I don’t dive more then 1-2 times a year so I haven’t made the investment in all of the equipment. I like to just bring my mask, snorkel, and dive computer. It usually saves me about $10-$20 depending on the dive company.

Best Cozumel Dive Packages Company

I have been diving with Scuba Tony’s for more then 20 dives. I absolutely recommend them. The reason I continue to use them is because of their level of service, cost, and their faster smaller boats. Scuba Tony’s Cozumel Dive Packages are competitively priced. Their prices for a 2-tank dive is usually $90. This includes the guide, the boat, taxes, the marine tax, fruit, sodas, water and you get a free souvenir water bottle. Typically they only have about 6 divers per boat which means you get a high level of one on one service, you don’t feel pressured by 20 people milling around you trying to get in and out of the boat, and you don’t have to fight to see things with so many other divers. Here is Scuba Tony’s website. https://www.scubatony.com/default.aspx I highly recommend them for the best overall value for your money.

Cozumel dive shops – Which one?

There are a lot of Cozumel dive shops to choose from. How do you pick one? Some of it is based on your preference. Some of it has to do with reviews you read on popular travel sites.

Cozumel Dive Shops

In order to choose a Cozumel dive shop you need to consider the following recommendations.

1. Reviews on popular travel sites
2. A small boat or big boat
3. Do they provide equipment
4. Cost
5. Safety of boat and company

Cozumel dive shops

Reviews on popular travel sites

An important first step is to look at popular travel sites have to say about each dive shop. There is nothing better then hearing what your fellow divers have to say. Read at least 20-30 reviews, both good and bad. Often you will eliminate a Cozumel dive shop off of your list very quickly after you read the reviews

A small boat or a large boat

This one can be a little harder to decide on specifically in Cozumel. Small boats have less people, you get more 1 on 1 help, you get to know your fellow divers a little better, and generally the service is a little better. The negative of a Cozumel dive shop smaller boat is that the port closes frequently due to wind or higher waves. This immediately eliminates many of the smaller boats as they will not be able to go out. In contrast a larger boat rarely will have problems going on windy or higher wave days. However, Cozumel dive shops with larger boats have a lot more people versus a smaller boat. A smaller boat may only have 8 people while a larger boat could have 20 or more divers. In a larger boat there is a lot more congestion on the boat and in the water. There is typically not as much one on one service as there are just too many people on a larger boat. Choosing the right boat size for you will help you choose the right Cozumel dive shop.

Equipment and Cost

Cozumel dive shops are reasonably priced. For a 2 tank dive with equipment it generally costs about $95. However not all Cozumel dive shops have computers available for you so it is highly recommended that you buy one before you get to Cozumel or that you rent one from a local dive shop near your home. Generally Cozumel dive shops have pretty good equipment but you should always do a safety check on your equipment each time you dive.

Safety of Boat and Dive Company

Safety always comes first! You should ask before you book with a Cozumel dive shop if they have a fire extinguisher in their boat and if they have life vests for everyone. If they don’t at least have these 2 things then don’t use them. Also talk to the Cozumel dive shop before you book with them how they work with beginner divers and experienced divers. What depths they like to dive at, and what safety precautions they take during the dive. These are only a few safety tips, there are a lot others.

Cozumel activities that you don’t want to miss…

There are lots of great Cozumel activities for everyone. Some of the most popular Cozumel activities include snorkeling, massages, Chankaanab National Park, shopping, sailing, and scuba diving.

Snorkeling

Snorkeling is one of the more popular Cozumel activities. There are lots of places to go snorkeling. All of the beach clubs in my earlier post on Cozumel beaches provide all of the equipment you will need to snorkel including fins, a mask, and a snorkel. For young children or those that can’t swim they provide life vests made for snorkeling.

Massages

There are lots of great choices for massages and is one of the more popular Cozumel activities. There are several good massages in the downtown area of San Miguel which is the main city in Cozumel. You will find the massage locations near the central square in the downtown area. The prices vary between $40-$65 for 1 hour. Of course if you want a really professional massage many of the larger hotels have incredible massages but the cost will be a lot higher.

Chankanaab National Marine Park

Cozumel activities

Perhaps one of the most popular Cozumel activities is Chankanaab National Marine Park. It is famous for its Dolphin encounters, snorkeling, massages, Manatees you can fee, zip lines, cafeteria, and it has restrooms, showers, and lockers. While expensive it has the most Cozumel activities in one place. You can experience almost all of the major attractions that Cozumel has to offer in one place.

Shopping

Cozumel activities

Of course no island adventure is complete without lots of shopping. If you like to shop Cozumel gives you lots of different shopping options including high end retail, local Mexican retail stores, and like any area in Mexico it has the small tent cities where you can buy anything everything and haggling is the key to get low prices. One of the favorite Cozumel activities for many tourists is to haggle. A quick tip would be to always start 50% lower then the price they tell you. Also, always pay in pesos. In most cases you will get better prices.

Sailing Excursions

Cozumel activities

There are all kinds of Cozumel activities to choose from. You can ride on a chartered sailboat, or rent your own sailboat. If you join a sailboat excursion the price will usually include food and drinks. Some of the sailing charters also include snorkeling or sunset cruises. There are so many Cozumel activities to choose from.

Scuba Diving

Cozumel activities

One of the Cozumel activities that Cozumel is most known for is scuba diving. Cozumel sits on one of the largest reefs in the world. There are tons of scuba diving companies and shops that will take you on a 2 tank dive. They provide everything you need. You just need to bring proof of your diving certification. If you aren’t certified you can get certified in Cozumel. The diving in Cozumel provides opportunities for both experts and beginners. All you have to do is tell your dive shop operator what your skill level is and what you are looking for. The dive shops are very experienced and know what they are doing. There are tons of fish, hundreds of feet of visibility and warm 80 degree water. The variety of fish is what I really enjoy. Cozumel activities are plentiful and easy to schedule ahead of time.

Cozumel dive sites are incredible!

Cozumel dive sites are some of the best in the world. The things you see, and the experiences you will have will last for a lifetime.

Cozumel dive sites have dives that are perfect for the experienced diver as well as a beginner diver. There are tons of fish, very clear water with high visibility, and warm 80 degree water.

Types of Dives

Cozumel dive sites offer both shallow and deep water dives. The visibility is really good. Cozumel dive sites offer visibility from 100 ft to 300 ft. Cozumel dive sites are primarily drift dives meaning you literally get to just go with the current. It makes the dives more relaxing and enjoyable as you aren’t constantly fighting the current to go in one particular direction or another.

In Cozumel you hire a company to go diving. The company will provide the Captain, the air tanks, and a Master Diver who will go down with you to lead you in the dive so you know which direction to go and where the best locations are for seeing whatever type of marine life you want to see. Typically most of the diving companies will provide you with some sort of small snack, breakfast, and some type of water, soda, or juice. Cozumel dives have so much to offer. One of the things Cozumel is known for is its great marine life.

Cozumel Beaches are the best in the world!

Cozumel Beaches
Cozumel Beaches

Cozumel beaches are some of the best in the world. They feature warm 80 degree water, soft sand, and clear water. There are palm trees everywhere. Most of the most popular Cozumel beaches are called beach clubs.

There is typically a fee for the beach clubs but the fee is worth every penny. Where else can you enjoy 80-90 degree weather, beautiful beaches, and have food and drinks brought right to your lounge chair on the beach. Many of the Cozumel beach clubs have lots of palm trees overhead and thatched umbrellas to help keep sunburns from ruining your vacation. Cozumel beaches are really incredible!

Cozumel Beaches Fees and Options

The fees vary from approximately $20 to as high as $80 per person. Many of the beach clubs include food and drinks in the fee. There are often multiple options for what type of fee you have to pay. For example some Cozumel beach clubs may have a small entrance fee with a minimum food and drink purchase. Others may include the food and drink in your fee which will of course make the fee significantly higher. Generally the drinks are pretty good and some of the food is pretty good.

Bottled Water and Ice

Make sure you drink bottled water and ask if their ice is made from purified water. Most of the larger beach clubs bring in their ice already made with purified water.

Cozumel Beaches

Most Popular Beach Clubs

Some of the most popular Cozumel Beaches are Paradise Beach Club(www.paradise-beach-cozumel.com), and Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club.(www.mrsanchos.com) Mr. Sancho’s has a higher upfront fee that includes everything while Paradise Beach Club has the lower upfront fee but you have to buy a minimum amount of food and drink. Paradise Beach had less people but not as good as service while Mr. Sancho’s had a lot of people but much better service. Either way you can’t go wrong.

Cozumel beaches are lots of fun. There is nothing better then sand, sun, warm water, and palm trees.
